Faced with a shortage of post players for next season, the Cal men’s basketball team gave itself a boost in that area on Monday, when head coach Ben Braun announced the signing of 6-foot, 10-inch center Gabriel Hughes to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Bears. -more-



Eminent anthropologist Washburn dies

Sherwood Larned Washburn, the father of modern primatology who first glimpsed the evolution of human behavior in the actions of monkeys and apes, died Sunday from pneumonia at Alta Bates Medical Center. He was 88. -more-
