OAKLAND – Questions still surround the death of an Oakland woman found Friday afternoon by her husband who was later arrested for a parole violation.

The case could mark the city’s 100th homicide, but Oakland Police Sgt. Brian Medeiros said Wednesday it is still being classified as a suspicious death and information is being kept confidential.

“At this point we are not calling it a homicide. We’re investigating it as one, but at this point we’re calling it a suspicious death,” Medeiros said.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, the police department received a call from Russell Duda saying he had come home to find his wife unconscious.

Police arrived to find Charlotte Duda, 55, on the floor with severe injuries. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment where she was declared dead.

Russell Duda was later taken into custody when it was discovered he had violated a parole violation by visiting his wife. He has been convicted in the past for domestic violence.

Duda told police his wife had fallen the previous day and has denied assaulting her.

Medeiros said the cause of death has not been determined.

Results from an autopsy are not expected for four to six weeks.
