Fund for Local Reporting! Mark Coplan, Berkeley Unified School District spokesperson, was quoted in the June 26, 2008 edition of the Berkeley Daily Planet regarding the departure of former Cragmont Principal Don Vu. This quote contained inaccurate information stating, “Vu’s contract had not been renewed after his first year at Cragmont and ... he was leaving to pursue other options.”
Don Vu has informed the Planet that his resignation was solely his decision and that the district acknowledged that he had made significant contributions to Cragmont and BUSD during his time in Berkeley. District Superintendent Bill Huyett previously told the Planet that Vu had left on his own accord saying, “He took the initiative to get another job, and we are sad to see him go.”
Vu states, “I am grateful to have had an opportunity to get to work with many good people in Berkeley this last year. I am also grateful to be in a position to be able to choose where I can work. I did not feel that Berkeley and Cragmont were a good fit for me. I was simply not happy there and chose to go back to a district where I can put all my focus on helping kids be successful.”
