The University of California women’s swim program, besides being represented by former Cal standout Haley Cope and junior breaststroker Staciana Stitts, will have another Golden Bear involved with the United States’ Goodwill Games team, as head coach Teri McKeever has been selected as one of USA’s assistant coaches.

McKeever was the 1999 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and has led Cal to a 78-35 dual meet record and five consecutive Top 10 national finishes. She joins head coach Dick Shoulberg (Germantown Academy) and assistant John Pontz (Arizona State) as members of the women’s coaching staff for the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia.

At the past week’s Phillips 66 National Championships at the Clovis West High School pool, McKeever’s Cal Aquatics team placed sixth in the team standings. Cope, who just completed her collegiate eligibility this past spring for the Bears, won the national title in 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:01.89.

Other Cal swimmers competing at the Phillips 66 National Championships included sophomore Danielle Becks, who placed ninth in the 100 free (56.76) and 10th in the 200 free (2:02.46) and senior Alice Henriques, who was 10th in the 200 back (2:16.89) and 14th in the 100 back (1:04.57). Also, a 400-meter freestyle relay team of Cal junior Michelle Harper, Becks, Henriques and Cope placed fifth at the national championships with a time of 3:51.85.
