Hit-and-run suspect goes to court
A Mexican citizen who was charged with hit-and-run and manslaughter charges in connection with a crash that killed a 5-year-old Oakland girl as she was walking to school with relatives is scheduled to be sentenced Monday.
Osvaldo Urzua, 41, pleaded no contest to a charge of manslaughter in a deal with Alameda County prosecutors. He is expected to spend six years behind bars.
Police arrested Urzua several days after a 1967 Ford Mustang, which he allegedly took from his employer without permission, plowed through a group of people Jan. 16 as they were walking to the International Community School on International Boulevard.
Ana Karen Cerna died from her injuries a day after the incident. Five other people, her brother, three cousins and an aunt, were injured.
Urzua fled the scene and was arrested later.
